The Beekeeper of Aleppo by Christy Lefteri
by Amelie Varah
The poignant and relevant book follows the harrowing journey faced by married couple Nuri and Afra as they as they are forced to flee the imminent danger of the Syrian civil war. The book is beautifully and poetically written, with the last word of each chapter being the first word of the next, creating a fluidity between different time frames. Though most of us are aware of the horrors that refugees face, it is sometimes rather difficult to feel a personal connection to those struggling, however this book allows you to empathise with the characters on a personal level. I found this book to be very moving and thought-provoking, and I’d recommend it to anyone who would like to read a (recent) historical fiction portraying the very real effects of war.
